Kalambaka,Meteora

Let's start a little bit differently.Let's start by images.
Let's start sitting at the edge of one of the Meteora's rocks which can reach the height of 400m.
Let's travel by mind million years ago and let's imagine that we wet our foot in the water of one big lake. A lake which was covering the Thessalian valley.
Look of the horizon and imagine that lake drying gradually recovering all this natural beauty in front of you.
This is the most possible option for how all these were created.
You are in front of a geological phenomeno universally unique, where words like Admire, Unexplainble, Impressing which we usually find in many writtings can describe it's size only to one point.
Let's travel by mind back to 48 p.c
look down and see the dust of Julius Ceasar's legeons. Imagine the size of his army getting through Kalambaka(Aeginion called then) so as to face the Pombious's army at Farsale.
Kalambaka was the passing way for the south and it's geological possition all these years was important and powerful because of the morphology of it's ground.
Walk in the old city and hear the modern rythms of the new one. It is the biggest city in the area and a lot of tourists from all the world visit it all the time.
For this helps the fact that the area in and around Kalambaka owns the facilities to satisfy most kinds of tourism as relegion, alternative, athletic, agrotourism etc.
There are enough hotel units of a sufficient level able to host all the tourists in the area.
Of course there are cambings and anything a visitor may need - banks, stores, health centres ect.
During our visit to the area we talked with a lot of tourists, most of them groups from Greece, Europe and Asia.
We got only good, possitive comments and we saw satisfaction in their faces. The most impressive was the only comment that we heard from everyone....
"we got tired and we didn't enjoyed it as much as we wanted".
As we told they travelled a lot of kilometres the previous day, reaching Kalambaka late at afternoon or even in the evening,
stayed for the night and early in the morning they had to visit Meteora and return in the city again.
Practically their sight-seeing was lasting only few hours and they didn't had time to see what the area offers except one or two monasteries and the axceptional view from a rock.

We mention in the video that the area worths more than just a visit.
In few words if you want to visit the area you must use Kalambaka as a base so as to enjoy everything it has to offer and not just for sight-seeing.
You can walk in the city, in the squares or in the roads below the rocks.
You can drink your coffee or enjoy your drink in the cafe-bars or to taste special foods in the restaurants.
Going to Kastraki, at the right there is a road that leads you to the old city.
Leave your bike or your car and walk the narrow roads below the rocks of Meteora.

Old city View from the old city
Next is Kastraki a small village built also below the rocks. So, natural beauty, roads to walk, stores to shop and taverns to taste meats and dishes of the area.
A lot of people visit Kastraki. It has anything it takes to enjoy your staying. Hotels, campings, taverns, cafes etc.
As it concerns Meteora, you don't have to hurry. Spend as much time as you can to go around the area.
It's a pleasant destination with good road and natural beauty. But it needs of your attention during the weekends because buses and cars are so many that you will not enjoy it.
There are 24 monasteries but only six of them are open for the visitors, one better of the other with a lot of orthodoxian treasures and it worths visiting them.
Notice how they are built and see how you can reach them by bridges or stairs in the rocks.
Make some stops during your touring and look at them from below before go up. Look the details on the rocks of Meteora, climb them and enjoy the view.
